Within seconds our disinfection system works against highly durable bacteria spores and resistant viruses. Based on our novel 2-component system, we offer solutions for previously unsolved problems in surface disinfection and in the reprocessing of medical devices. We are also conducting research into the use of Sporosan as a salt-based solid disinfectant.
Persistent bacterial spores that defy even established alcohol-based disinfectants still pose a major challenge. Absorbed in the body they can release toxins that can lead to diarrhea and vomiting with severe courses, even death. Sporicidal disinfections are thus of utmost importance to society.
As part of a 2.5-year project funded by the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the European Regional Development Fund we want to establish Sporosan® in the form of salt tabs or granulate mixtures for rinsing devices. Similar to dishwasher tabs, the user can add a disinfection tab to the device to kill all microorganisms and bacterial spores on the equipment being cleaned. Thanks to ERDF support, we can investigate the process for generating active ingredients from salt-based solids and optimize storage resistance, stability and efficacy. Funding of more than half a million euros will also make it possible to carry out microbiological tests and studies on the toxicology of the active ingredient. At the same time, the latter form the basis for the biocide approval aspired for Sporosan®.
Up to now the Sporosan® disinfectant active ingredient has been formed by combining two liquid components. The two-component system can be easily implemented in industrial settings, especially in professional cleaning and disinfection equipment. However, it can only be used by trained personnel. By developing salt tabs we want to make our disinfectant accessible for untrained personnel as well and thus make it possible to, for example, disinfect spore-contaminated dishes in healthcare facilities at any time and in a user-friendly manner. Another advantage of the salt-based solids is the reduction in transport volume, as no water is required for the granulate mixture.
The project will end in October 2023; by then we will be a significant step closer to our goal of making Sporosan®accessible to a broad range of users, particularly in the healthcare sector.
